Maithili is a prominent language spoken mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, and in some parts of West Bengal besides being a major regional language of Nepal – especially in the Terai region. Maithili is the is the 16th most spoken language in India and 40th most spoken language in the World. Since 2003, Maithili has been included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Maithili was recognized as a major Literary Language by Sahitya Akademi – the National Academy of Letters in India since 1964. The language is taught at the School to Post-graduate levels with numerous departments that conduct doctoral research on this language and literature.
